Digestive Deep Healing Jump-Start

TRANSCRIPT: Hello, hello, I'm Liz Morgan with People Planet Healing Solutions. I wanted to talk about deep digestive Healing, and my Digestive Deep Healing Jumpstart specifically. 

So I recently had a dear old friend reach out, I hadn't been too much in touch with her except just through social media in a few years, and she had had this major, major digestive system breakdown. She reached out to me and she said, You know, I thought you just did like food politics, food culture kind of work. I was desperately looking for help with my digestive problems and looked at your website. She said, I realized that you specialize in digestive healing, and I hadn't really realized that.

So what I realized was, I have been talking a lot about the food culture, and food systems side of things. So I think it was time for me to talk some more about the digestive healing work, which I do and have been doing really intensively for six years. First, on my own very struggling digestive system, and then with hundreds of clients.

So I want to talk to you about my process for digestive healing, because it's really different than what happens at the doctor's office, which is why it's so important to do both, you know, it's so important to do both the medical experts and the functional nutrition experts.

So, first and foremost, a lot of people think that functional nutrition is just about dieting. Here's your diet, stick with it, maybe I'll coach you along the way. It's actually so much not that. It's so much not that.

What I do is a really serious look into your digestive system, through symptom analysis through food journal analysis, through health history analysis, but also through lab testing, really powerful stool testing, where we can really get a good look at the microbiome, all the bugs in your gut. And that's typically not something a doctor does. I have had some clients where the doctor does some stool testing, but they're only looking for a few bad bugs, right like hPylori, C.diff, like there's just a few that they're looking for.

My test is way more comprehensive, but it goes beyond just the test that I use. So it's a whole system. It's a whole functional system of deep digestive investigation, and rebalancing.

A lot of people think, I wake up with a bellyache every day, but that's just normal, right? Or I have reflux, but like everyone I know does, I just take some meds and you know, it kind of helps.

Here's the problem with this perspective of like ignoring our digestive symptoms, or just going on medications to squash the digestive process. Digestion is really, really important. First and foremost, we must digest our food.

Let's let's talk a little bit about what the digestive system is, right? So first of all, your brain has to be calm. In order to send signals to your stomach to release hydrochloric acid, your your liver, and gallbladder to release bile your pancreas to release pancreatic amylase. So we have to be in rest or digest mode. That's why it's called that it's the opposite of fight or flight.

In fight or flight, we're stressed out. Most of us are stressed out way too much of the time, including when we're eating. And so being stressed out when we eat that's a major part of the digestive cascade, right? If we're not in calm mode, when we're eating, you're just gonna have digestive problems.

So it starts in the brain and we have to chew our food. Get all that salivary amylase in there, then the food goes into the stomach. Hydrochloric acid dissolves proteins and minerals. Really important step in the digestive process. So many people are taking a proton pump inhibitor, acid blocker an antacid. This interferes with what's supposed to happen in the stomach.

I help a lot of people figure out how to heal that system so you're not getting that acid reflux. So your food actually can keep going down the system as it should. Then food goes into the small intestines, the bile flow goes into the small intestine to help, bile removes toxic, toxic waste from the body. But it also helps digest fat. Pancreas releases pancreatic amylase, digest fat, protein, carbs.And then it keeps moving through the small and large intestines and through the intestines, we are absorbing our nutrients.

What's also happening in the intestines is we have a very complex, diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungus, sometimes some protozoa or parasites. Some of them are good, and we really need them to help turn our food into other nutrients to help digest the food. This ecosystem in our gut helps, that helps us keep a balanced weight. So lots of people I see like are stuck weighing more than is comfortable for them. It's a microbiome, it's an it's a digestive problem. It's not like a willpower problem. We just have to heal the digestive system, and then and then weight off and we'll balance.

The microbiome has an impact on our huge impact on our immune function. It's a really important barrier protects the lining of the intestines from other pathogens. They make nutrients like K2, and there's a there's a connection to cardiovascular health and sugar handling systems as well.

So that's just a brief summary of what the digestive system is. I had a client recently I was talking about the digestive healing work we could do, and she was like, Oh, wait, hold on, what? What even is the digestive system really? We take it so for granted.

So it's really complex. There's a lot of parts that can break down, the can break. And so it's really important not to just like, say, well, I'll just live with it. You know, it's not that bad. It's really important to really say, well, what part is broken? Is my stomach not making hydrochloric acid? Well don't want to look at are you missing nutrients that go into that? Are you stressed while you're eating? You know, are you not chewing your food? What part? You know, is your liver really overburdened or sluggish or not making bile? Is that related to your diet? Is that related to toxic exposure? What's going on with your microbiome? Do you have like a candida overgrowth or a parasite or some other bug that's just like taking over and then good bugs aren't getting the food that they need to do their jobs?

Or, you know, there's so many little little particulars that can go wrong. The good news is, it's so often fixable. And it's not what your doctor does. This is what a functional nutritionist does, and some functional medicine doctors, depending on like who it is. This is why it's so important to use both medical and functional approach to oversee and help you recover, stabilize. You know some things, some, for some people, the best we can do is like create a lot more stability. Some people can just like recover completely.

So how do you know if you have a digestive issue? Well, it might be obvious might feel like acid reflux. It might feel like bloating, it might feel like bowel movement problems. It might feel like you're hungry all the time. Like you're never getting enough nourishment. Well, you might not be you might not be digesting your food.

It also might look like high or low blood sugar. It might look like poor sleep. It might look like excessive stress. It might look like bad skin breakouts. It might. It often looks like hormonal imbalances, right? perimenopause, menopause, for the ladies like feels crazy and out of control, hot flashes, mood swings, all this stuff.

You might not have to live with it. Right? Everyone just goes well, you know, it's just that time of life. And that's just how it is. Not necessarily. Not necessarily.

It could look like high cholesterol. Right? If your liver's not working right and you're not eating the right balance and you're not digesting the right balance. It might look like high cholesterol. It might look like joint pain. It often looks like joint pain or arthritis.

It might even look like like ADD, ADHD, something like that, poor concentration, brain fog.

Okay, so could it be obvious they just have symptoms, could be something that has spiraled into another system of the body and it's not obviously digestive.

Okay, so what do we do to fix it? We have to clean up the diet, we have to get you on like a really beautiful, wholesome, nourishing, delicious, delicious food. This isn't dieting, this isn't deprivation. This is like eating wholesome real food that's awesome and delicious is gonna make you feel good that you're gonna love, that you're sourcing from like organic,, and regenerative, and local farms. So you're gonna feel good about where you're getting your food from, it's delicious, you're going to be excited to share this beautiful wholesome food with yourself, your family or friends. It's going to be like food you're proud of, right?

So, so many people I work with, like almost everyone has a really uncomfortable relationship with food, and an uncomfortable relationship with their body. And so just up leveling your food is, is one step to get you more nourished and help you change that relationship.

Okay, so then we do some lab testing. We do a really, really big stool test. It's just one collection at home. Easy send it in, we get the results. And we look and we say okay, what, what's jumping out at us here. And we're going to kill the bad bugs, we're going to repopulate the good bugs, we're going to do some strategies to get all of those digestive juices working and flowing correctly. And we're going to do some strategies and nutrients to heal and seal and nourish the whole lining of your digestive tract, stomach, small intestine, large intestine. These can get really inflamed, these can get broken. And that's why we don't absorb our food correctly.

So we heal the whole system, every bit of it, the liver, the pancreas, the the gallbladder, the microbiome, and all the tissues of the whole digestive tract. We'll uplevel your eating hygiene, right. So if you're eating in a stressed out situation on the go, not chewing your food, we're going to work on that too.

Often, we have to work on stress, identifying I've got a list of like 30 different possible sources of stress. Malnourishment was one. Gut infections is one. And then you know, of course, like relationships, work, all that kind of stuff, not sleeping enough, all these things. So so we really figure out where's your stress coming from? And what's possible to address. So you've got like stress up here, right? And maybe you can't deal with all of it right now. Right? You've got a kid that's having problems. You've got you know, there's this thing your schedule, whatever like, but we work on chipping away at those stressors to just reduce your overall feelings of stress while we heal your body. Once your body is healed, stress really melts away. This whole is like stress you thought you had to live with you don't. And a lot of that comes from from the actual physical healing and getting you nourished.

So but that's not all. Along with the the digestion test, I always do a food sensitivity test. Because when our digestive system breaks, food sensitivities flare up. A whole bunch of reasons for that. One thing I said earlier is that the there's a big part of the immune system lives in the digestive system. It's not just the microbiome, but it's like SigA, you know, vitamin D, vitamin A, like there's so many pieces of immune function that that contribute to food sensitivity. So when the digestive system breaks down, so often food sensitivities go up.

And so you're just feeling inflamed all the time or tired all the time, or your joints hurt, you just don't know why. So we look at your food sensitivities. We remove the food sensitivity foods for three to six months. Now these change, right so you're not stuck with those food sensitivities forever. Remove them to reduce inflammation and reduce stress in the body and to give that digestive system a much better chance to heal.

And then I also in this digestive deep healing jumpstart program, I also do a comprehensive blood panel so we can really get a good look at what's going on. And again, this is really different than the blood panel your doctor does, a lot of the same markers, but a lot more markers. In functional nutrition, we look at the whole body as a whole. And so I can I order so many more markers. And we're really piecing together like, what is your body telling us? What are these markers telling us? Not just what's in a disease state already like that your doctor would say, Okay, this is this marker is way off time you go on these meds.

We say, well, what's what's what's getting out of balance, what's what's somewhat out of balance, because we want to fix it before it spirals out of control into some scary diagnosis, if at all possible. So we do that. So we do that and you get a beautiful report card that my lab spits out for you explaining all of the markers. We'll go over it in detail. And then it's really fun to do that test after the digestive healing protocol. So you can see Oh, my inflammation markers are down. Oh, my white blood cells have calmed down, they're not fighting off those infections in my gut anymore. Hey, my cholesterol came down because my liver's working better and I'm not, I'm not craving sugar constantly all the time anymore, because I'm actually better nourished.

So we do the food sensitivity test a comprehensive blood panel, and comprehensive stool test to see what's going on with your digestive system as well. And then it's a it's generally about a three month protocol. So if you haven't bugs to eradicate, it's a three month eradication protocol. We take supplements to kill off the bad bugs, repopulate the good ones, and really heal the whole digestive system.

Now, some people you know, if you're used to like, going through the McDonald's drive thru every single day, for every single meal, we may spend a few months first teaching you some whole food skills, how to eat a healthier diet first, before we jump into that digestive healing protocol.

And then it depends on how like some people's bodies are just like really sensitive, we have to go really slow. But generally, it's a three month eradication protocol, and then a month of rebalancing. You know, you remove the supplements, and see how your body's doing, see what your body can do on its own now. And that is so, so fun. And then you can retest the food sensitivity tests, see what foods you can add back in. You can retest the digestive health test, if you'd like to see how well you did. Some people are like, You know what, I feel great. I don't need to retest. Other people or like, I feel great, but I want to see other people, you know, have to do a few rounds, depending on how really sticky your situation is, how long it's been in there and that sort of thing.

But I've had great success, eradicating Candida, h pylori overgrowth, all kinds of bacterial imbalances. And that's bacteria, the probiotics, you know, most people know about probiotics from your yogurt or yoru kombucha. Those are bacteria. So we look at the balance of good and bad. And

I've just seen so many people, I mean, improve their menstrual symptoms improve their I don't even specialize in cardio conditions at all, but I've seen it change with this work. Digestion, inflammation, food sensitivities, eating a wholesome, real, nourishing, non toxic diet, dealing with stress, these things are fundamental to our health, absolutely fundamental.

And so if you don't if you're having really any kind of health problem, but especially if you know it's digestive, you know, it's like you have these food sensitivity reactions. So, so important to do this work. I have so many people come to me and say, Well, I did a colonoscopy with my doctor, like, isn't that the highest best only thing to do? It's not, it must be done, it should be done. And that's one way to track what is happening. But it's not a healing strategy. And so what I offer is a healing strategy to really see more deeply what's going on and what we can do to fix it. And these protocols and these strategies are really truly life changing. So I think I'll end it for now, right there.
