Skin Microbiome

Synthetic T-shirts make us smell bad. Here's why.

It seems like we start to smell bad just moments after putting on a polyester shirt. This does not happen with a cotton T-shirt so what's going on? More importantly, is the odor something we should be worried about as health conscious people?

It turns out, polyester actually promotes growth of one type of bacteria that causes the smell! Whoah! It's not US that smells bad, it's the bacteria!

"The bacteria that flourish on...

Binge Eating

Oct 15, 2019

I speak from experience when I discuss out of control ice cream binges! Here are my tips for dealing with a severe ice cream tendency.

1. Choose better quality. Most ice cream you'll find in grocery stores is full of crappy ingredients like guar gum, fake flavors (often called natural flavors), and other ingredients you might be avoiding like gluten.

So, step number one: when you do choose to eat ice cream, choose the best quality food you can find. (This is my advice, btw for all food...

Healing

Oct 01, 2019

We are not lizards. We cannot grow back a tail (or a leg) if it has been lost. However, our human bodies have a huge ability to heal themselves.

My clients come to me broken and struggling and feeling like they don't belong. They have some sense that eating better might help them feel better. They have some sense that fixing their digestive system might help them. But they generally don't realize how big the  transformation they are about to experience is going to be. They don't...

Digestion

Sep 15, 2019

If you are new to the study of digestion, I can't think of a first, opening sentence that could adequately prepare you to fully take in and appreciate the complexity and perfection of the miracle of the human digestive system. It is a remarkable series of hormonal cues and chemical reactions. It is a complex ecosystem in its own right. We depend on its elegant, precision to stay alive and healthy. And every time we eat food, we feed it.

Digestive analysis and healing is...

Gluten

Sep 01, 2019

If your health is perfect and there’s no room for improvement, I say - go with it. Keep doing what you're doing. Most of us fit into a different category though. Most of us don’t feel as good, vibrant, or healthy as we would like.

If you suffer from IBS or IBD, joint pain, diarrhea or constipation, stomach pain, bloating, canker sores, osteoporosis, diabetes, autoimmune disease, PMS or uncomfortable menopause symptoms, food sensitivities, allergies, fibromyalgia, chronic pain,...

Food System

Aug 01, 2019

I don't think it's too much to ask for an American food system that supports human health and ecosystem health. I'm not suggesting that we eliminate all junk food, all sweets, all processed food. But I am saying that the overwhelming purpose of a food system (that is by the way heavily subsidized by the federal government) should be to support the health of the people.

What I see every day is that my clients struggle to navigate a toxic malnourishing food system. They struggle...

Fat

Jul 01, 2019

Remember the fairy tale, Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean? That was me - the wife!

Of course, like all of us, I spent many decades avoiding fat like the plague. I had no concept that some types of fat were wholesome, good and essential to my health and that other kinds of fat were toxic and should be avoided. So I avoided all fat and yet I craved it like crazy.

Once I started studying nutrition and gave myself permission to eat fat, I ate an extraordinary amount of it...

Top 5 Foods

Jun 01, 2019

There is a dangerous trend in the world of food and health blogging. It’s the one where there’s a grabby headline claiming a certain food is the magic cure for some disease or symptom.

Headlines I’ve seen include things like “Top 8 Superfoods that Heal Your Entire Body,” and “17 Superfoods that Heal Disease”, and “16 Foods to Cure Common Illnesses”, and “The 5 Best Foods for Your Heart.” These are real headlines. The...

Weight

May 01, 2019

In a world where 40 percent of American adults and 19 percent of our youth are obese, according to the Center for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics, we are clearly in the midst of a national health crisis.

Obesity is not merely a matter of weight, but is usually also a symptom of systemic dysfunction, bodily breakdown, and of a health emergency.

It is also a symptom of a broken food system and of a poorly thought out regulatory framework for school food programs...

Vegetables

Apr 01, 2019

Everyone knows they "should" eat more vegetables, but few of us have really studied the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrient content of individual vegetables, let along the cancer blocking, digestive healing, mood balancing, or cardio supporting properties of these magical plants. Your life will improve if you start eating more vegetables, so we thought we'd share a quick primer on how and why to do it.

I love the way that Dr. Terry Wahls, creator of the scientifically validated, Wahls Protocol,...
